Living Portraits By showing the different layers of a Tudor woman's costume as well as the articles she carried around with her and in her basket children will gain insight into why particular items were selected for inclusion in a portrait. There will be the opportunity to handle items of clothing and accessories. |

Wills and Inventories Pupils will be taught how to 'crack the code' and read Tudor handwriting using the will and inventory of John Ball. They will then discover the layout of John's house and the belongings he had in each room. They will see what a typical labourers cottage contained and can compare that with their own homes. |

Mystery Tudor Objects Using museum type objects pupils will be taken through an activity to work out what a particular object is. In groups the children will have the opportunity to question and draw the object, elicit answers, and feed back the result of their enquiries to the rest of the class. |

Buildings and Houses Pupils will be shown examples of the houses Tudor people lived in and an explanation of how they were built. They will also be given clues on how to recognise them. If appropriate, they can be taken out to identify local buildings and record the details and draw at least one. A quarter scale model of a timber-framed lych gate is available for pupils to put together so that they can get a fuller understanding of how these building were put together. |
| The Story of John Ball The story of John Ball will be told using his will and inventory and objects similar to those in his inventory as props. The story describes the conditions the Tudors lived in and tried to create a real picture of life in the late 16th century. |
